Artifact 7: Borden's Cooperation

This photograph depicts the First Session of the 13th Parliament in which Robert Borden was Prime Minister. This parliament was controlled by the Unionist Party, a party composed of Conservative Party members and some individual Liberal Party members and independents. This was specifically because of Robert Borden’s skill in uniting the Members of Parliament with the war effort and the idea that they would be stronger in uniting. At first, no Liberal or independent members were convinced, but as the war roared on, they soon realized the strengths Borden was speaking of. This of course being the ability in passing the Wartime Elections Act and other policy that would directly help the Canadian war effort. This government also helped to pass conscription prior when it was seen as popular among English Canadians. This was needed as the war required more military personnel and voluntary recruitment was not getting the numbers they so desperately needed. This photograph illustrates Borden’s Unionist government and showcases his lasting legacy by being able to unite together in a time of crisis. Instead of failing to work together, Borden strived to work with Liberal and Independent MP’s to help the Canadian war effort and to strengthen Canadian pride.
