Artifact 2: Canada's Wartime Readiness

This page from Robert Borden’s speeches illustrates Canada’s determination to follow behind Britain in the Great War. This is important because it showcases how Canada wants to follow Britain out of choice, rather than because it is a dominion of Britain. This highlights the autonomy that Robert Borden began even before the start of The Great War and showcases his belief in that by staying close to Britain, Canada will actually gain more autonomy and freedom from that relationship. This speech highlights the strength of Canada in the past and allows Canadians to feel secure that they will push through the hardships of war. Borden clearly showcases his belief that the Canadian people are strong and should be meaningful members of the Commonwealth. Borden was an important Prime Minister because he led the country through a time of doubt, insecurity, and fear but he united people together and worked toward the common goal of defeating Germany. Robert Borden, through this speech, illustrates his commitment to Britain and its war effort in the goal of creating a better world that will allow for a unique Canadian identity.
