With the recent victory of women gaining the right to vote also came the realization that women can be seen as vital sources of change, whether that be in the present or for future generations. This then sparked women's movements. One of the biggest movements/groups formed from the woman suffrage movement was Voice of Women (VOW) which campaigned for nuclear disarmament and peace during the Vietnam War. With these movements came the rise of young women who rejected war, imperialism, and the patriarchy. Making sure young women's voices and concerts were heard as protests would happen on college campuses and government buildings. Especially when it came to women of color, specifically Indigenous women not having a voice or rights at all. Women recognized the lack of diversity for women of colour in Canada and knew steps needed to be taken for that to change. In 1973, the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) assembled 13 Indigenous women’s groups to preserve culture and gain equal opportunity. The NWAC was tackling the Indian Act and its goal of extinction of women’s Indian Status if they married outside their communities. These groups and many others affected so many minority groups and their future due to their courage to stand for what they believe in.
