Christmas Day 1917. December 25, 1917. Canadian War Museum, Ottawa.

During the First World War, medical personnel played a huge role in treating the injured, nurses were among the most important of the medical personnel. These nurses served with the Canadian Army Medical Corps under the rank of Nursing Sisters. These sisters were tasked with maintaining the comfort of injured soldiers, tending to wounds and assisting in surgeries but as well as keeping the spirits of these soldiers high while they fight for their lives against infections and illness. In the photo one can clearly see a nurse reading to the soldiers while other nurses and injured military personnel gather around. This shows that these women not only worked hard to keep the men healthy and infection free, but also to keep them optimistic. These Nursing Sisters changed the course of the war for Canada, the optimism they instilled in the injured and the ill was another life saving tool these women had in their pockets.
