Artifact #2

Canadian War Contingent Association 'Women of the Empire in War Time'

This newspaper clipping dates to the First World War, and written from the Canadian War Contingent Association, and is called ‘Women of the Empire in War Time’. This collection focuses on Canadian women during World War I within the years 1914-1916. It appears to specifically highlight women’s contributions to war efforts through their work within the medical field. The article mentions a Canadian ran hospital known as Queen's Canadian Military Hospital, which opened October 1914 in Beachborough Park, Shorncliffe. This hospital is where wounded soldiers would seek medical attention, and it was largely led by Canadian women both locally and overseas. This article explains that Canadian women had sent over quality bed linens, and medical supplies, and have taken on the responsibility of wounded and ill soldiers. This news clipping directly expresses the profound impact Canadian women had within that hospital, and it asserts their capabilities within a public and national service.
